SDDP’s Statement on Noem’s Continued Support of The Republican Candidate For President

 October 18, 2016

Sioux Falls, SD – The South Dakota Democratic Party Executive Director Suzanne Jones Pranger released the following statement in response to State Rep. Paula Hawks’s debate with Rep. Kristi Noem at last night’s debate on KELO.

“The State Party congratulates Representative Paula Hawks on another great debate. Once again, Paula showed she is the right choice in this race on the issues important to all South Dakotans, and will make an excellent Representative for South Dakota in Congress”.
“I also wanted to commend Paula for the courage she showed by sharing her story as a victim of sexual assault. Paula’s story joins the chorus of many other survivors of sexual assault who say that Donald Trump – someone who has been accused by a growing number of women of sexual assault and was caught on video bragging about actions that amount to sexual assault – is unfit to be president”.

“Rep. Noem’s defense of her support of Donald Trump with debunked right-wing conspiracy theories was incredibly insensitive and shows just how out-of-touch she is from the South Dakota values of respect for others and upholding the dignity of the survivors of horrible crimes like sexual assault. Once again Kristi Noem is putting party loyalty above South Dakota values”.

SDDP’s Statement on Noem’s Support of Trump in Today’s Debate

October 10, 2016

Sioux Falls, SD – The South Dakota Democratic Party Executive Director Suzanne Jones Pranger released the following statement in response to State Rep. Paula Hawks’s debate with Rep. Kristi Noem today at the Sioux Falls Downtown Rotary meeting.

“The State Party congratulates Representative Paula Hawks on a great debate, focused on the issues important to South Dakotans. From agricultural and economic issues to foreign policy, it was clear Paula Hawks is the best choice to represent South Dakota families in Congress.

“In addition, it was extremely troubling to hear Kristi Noem double down on her support of Donald Trump, even after the release of a video last week where Trump brags about actions that amount to sexual assault. Trump’s statements were bad enough for Republicans Senator John Thune and Governor Dennis Daugaard to call for Trump to withdraw from the race, but Noem continues to support Trump despite the racist, misogynistic, and erratic statements he has made during the campaign that show he is unfit to be President.  Given Noem’s history of voting against the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act in 2013, I suppose it is not surprising, but it is disappointing nonetheless.”

Dakotafest to Host Hawks Town Hall Without U.S. House Rep. Kristi Noem

Sioux Falls, SD – Dakotafest has announced it will host an event with U.S. House candidate Paula Hawks Thursday, August 18 at 10:30 AM CT. Hawks released the following statement:

“I’d like to thank Dakotafest for allowing me the opportunity to address the crowd and speak to the concerns many of our farmers and ranchers have regarding the direction of agriculture in South Dakota. While I am disappointed Noem won’t debate at the event, I am excited to lay out my vision for South Dakota agriculture and answer questions from the audience.”

Hawks has made agriculture a centerpiece of her campaign calling for the reinstatement of Country of Origin Labeling, more robust protections for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), and a strong voice on the House Ag. Committee.

No Debate Because There’s No Explanation for Noem’s Ag Record

Sioux Falls, SD July 18, 2016 U.S. House candidate Paula Hawks issued the following statement Monday regarding her opponent’s refusal to participate in the annual Dakotafest Debate hosted in Mitchell, SD.

“It’s disappointing but not surprising that Kristi Noem will not answer questions from an audience with a strong agricultural background about leaving the House Ag Committee. There’s no debate because there’s no good explanation for leaving South Dakota’s number one industry without a strong voice. We’re already seeing the negative effects with the repeal of Country of Origin Labeling and low CRP numbers. When I get to Congress, I’m going to make sure my priorities match South Dakota’s. I don’t care if it’s glamorous or good Washington politics, I will demand a seat on the Ag Committee and will make sure we have a strong voice for South Dakota agriculture.”
